Bernardette left behind rigid company rules and created a flexible, 6-figure life

(0:00 – 1:00)
Hey there, Bill Von Fumetti here with Booming Bookkeeping Business, and I’m here with another one of my successful students. This is Bernadette. Hey there, Bernadette, how are you? I’m very good, Bill.

Thank you so much for the invite. Before we get into it, where were you before you kind of entered this world of bookkeeping? Okay, I was in the bookkeeping industry for more than 10 years before I met you. Started with a company that they needed someone in accounting field, and I started over there, and then I started preparing myself in this area.

And well, since in some point that you feel uncomfortable in the place that you are, you have comfort. And I said, I needed, I need something else. And I started looking, and you appear.

(1:03 – 3:00)
I just happened to pop up on Facebook, you know how it goes. And other people that has kind of similar courses, and I was comparing some of them, and is this what I want to do? And was like exciting moment. I was in a video call, in a Zoom call with other people before I, I paid for the course.

And I like the way you talk, the way you explain as well, because everything is clear. I like that. Bookkeeping can get complex, but if you break it down a little bit, and starting a business, it’s step by step.

I don’t know how they do it in Mexico anymore, but I didn’t know how to do it in United States. And I love it how you give us, because it’s not only me, you give us all these steps, baby steps. That you give us to form the entity, how to go to all of these steps that you have to go in order to run the business and do it correctly.

That is the best thing. Also, you saved me a lot of time in this curve that you have to learn and pay for that. What about starting your own business really appealed to you? Well, it feels, it was a challenge, of course, but I was confident that I couldn’t do it.

(3:01 – 4:59)
And I was confident that the knowledge that I have was enough. And I didn’t know that there is much more to do it, because it’s different when you serve different industries, how you treat them, et cetera. So it was a challenge.

But when I said to myself, you want to do it, you need to do it, go for that. What do you love most about being your own boss? In my previous job, I couldn’t have vacation on the 15th, on the 30th, and the days before and after, because payroll, because close the month, send the statements, invoices, et cetera. When I joined you and have my business, I went to a wedding, a family member wedding.

I went with my computer and everything and enjoyed the days. And if I needed to work in the important things, I was working over there. But enjoying my family and the things that we want to share.

And also, I went for vacation with my sons and my daughters-in-law. And I was with my computer, but enjoying the time with them. That kind of freedom is something that you don’t have anything that pay for that.

(4:59 – 5:18)
You started at zero, right? You just started your business. And where are you now? In terms of monthly revenue, where are you at? I’m almost in 100,000 on revenue. I closed my year in 97,000.

(5:18 – 6:02)
How does that make you feel? Wow. Proud of me. Proud of everything I have done.

Proud of being an immigrant, moving to the United States. That is another language, that it’s a different way to treat businesses. Accounting is almost the same.

It’s a little different, but they are little difference that they have in Mexico than here. But I have done and accomplished a lot of things. And right now with my business over here from scratch.

(6:02 – 6:51)
What were some of the fears that you had when you were starting your business? What were you worried about? The first thing was to form my business correctly. That was my first fear because I didn’t know even how to do it. And I didn’t do anything wrong.

I don’t like to do mistakes, obviously, but those mistakes could cost you many things with the IRS, with the state. And, oh, no, I don’t want to have problems over there. It was also how to do the marketing.

(6:52 – 7:57)
I was with the old marketing that we’re talking about 15 years ago. That was completely different. Many flyers and go to knock, knock the door, go to LinkedIn, Google my business, how to do your profile.

Something that important that is your profile in QuickBooks, in LinkedIn, in Facebook, Instagram, now TikTok, et cetera, et cetera. One of the things I like to say is that, you know, anybody can learn how to do bookkeeping. Anybody can do it.

It’s step. You’ve got to start small, you know, step by step. What would you say to somebody who’s interested in learning bookkeeping and they feel like maybe this is going to be too difficult for me? You can get clients.

Even if you are new, you will have it. Doesn’t have to be a no. Put the effort and you will be there.

(7:57 – 8:16)
If you are willing to do all of that, you are going to make it because you’re doing something different. If you do the same, you are going to get the same results. If you are willing to do other things, obviously it’s an effect.

(8:17 – 9:23)
So if you are willing to do all these things that you have to do to form your business, it’s going to happen. Talk a little bit about where, like what you’ve done in terms of like revenue up to this point and then what are your goals for moving forward? What I did since I started this business, I put my goal of revenue that first year. I reached it.

It wasn’t too small but not too high. Reasonable. And I reached it.

This second year, I missed it for $3,000. And next year I have another goal that I have already. But also talking about money, obviously I want to, I have to, I want to live better.

(9:24 – 10:07)
But also I want to have employees and with all my group make this company successful. That Houston, Texas know my company more. So that is something that I’m working on it and I’m creating it.

Well, I really appreciate you taking the time to speak with us today, Bernadette. This means a lot and it helps for other people to hear your inspiring story. So thank you very much.

Thank you, Bill. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk a little bit about it and share what I have been doing.
