Emily left the 9–5 grind and built a 6-figure dream life with her kids by her side

Hi, I’m Bill von Famitti with Booming Bookkeeping Business, and today I’m here with another one of my successful students. This is Emily. Emily, thanks for joining me today.

Hi. So let’s start with what you were doing before you started your bookkeeping business. What did life look like for you? I was working a full-time job for a landscape company in the area, and I was office manager.

(0:25 – 3:02)
It wasn’t a large operation, so I was wearing many hats, and one of the hats was bookkeeping, and so I used QuickBooks. I used QuickBooks Desktop for several years, and I did all the input of the accounts payable, accounts receivable, and everything that goes along with that. So I started looking early 2021.

I started looking around for information about starting my own bookkeeping business, and that’s when I stumbled across Booming Bookkeeping. Why did you end up leaving your position? Well, I hated working there anyways, and there’s just so many times just going to work, I would just be almost in tears because I just hated leaving the home and my kids, and I just wanted to search for a better life. Tell us a little bit about how you’re doing.

I mean, obviously, when you started your business, you started at zero revenue. What does revenue look like for you now? How many clients are we talking about? What does that look like? So I have nine clients now. Right now, my revenue, I just did my taxes for last year, and it was like $110,000 net income.

That’s another thing I love about this. It’s very low expenses, very low overhead, so most of the income you make is just cash in your bank. So right now, I would think, since I had to fire the other client, it’s probably $85,000.

But I’m quickly building it back up. I have someone who I first contacted when I first started, and it didn’t work out at the time, or he didn’t move forward with it for some reason, and it’s like two or three years later, he called me out of the blue and said, I need your help now. How is life different for you now that you’ve got this business? I feel like I’m living a dream.

It’s so wonderful. I get to be at home with my family, where we’re all getting ready for school, and it’s just so much more relaxed. I’m not as constantly stressed out about life in general as I was when I was working full time, and I just love it.

I get to volunteer at my kids’ schools, do stuff with my church, and just be more involved with things outside of my own life. I really enjoy that because there’s just so much to life, and I want to try to enjoy it all. I love going on vacations or trips to my family and not having to request time off and hope that they grant it.

(3:02 – 3:41)
What are your goals for your business? My goals would be, at this point, if I wanted to grow it much more as far as more clients, I would need some outside help with that, especially what kind of hires to make, how much I should be paying people, and how much more revenue do I need to bring in to pay for all that. I would like to grow my business and start hiring some bookkeeping assistants to help me with the easy data entry stuff. I would like to add consulting to my business as well.

(3:41 – 4:16)
I went back a few years ago to school and got my MBA at Mercer, right here. Cool. It’s displayed on the wall.

MBA with an accounting concentration. I would really love to offer that service and get people interested in wanting it. Can you say to someone who’s considering starting a bookkeeping business? If you’re willing to dedicate the time and resources to learning about bookkeeping, learning QuickBooks, putting it into marketing, marketing is your full-time job to start.

(4:17 – 4:45)
And if you’re willing to be dedicated to get it rolling and get it going, then I say go for it. I would say somebody starting a bookkeeping business, their chances of success, I mean, it really depends on how much you’re willing to put into it, how much time you’re willing to dedicate to it. We know if you have a full-time job, you’re working the evenings and the weekends for a while, so you get things going, but I think your success is really high.

(4:46 – 5:01)
Because there’s tons of people starting their own businesses all the time, and they’ll get to a point where they just can’t do that entry work anymore. They need somebody. And I say it’s not going out of style anytime soon.

(5:01 – 5:36)
What about my program did you find to be, to have the, you know, kind of the biggest impact on your progress? I mean, the support. Well, I mean, your modules are very, very helpful. And following those is very important.

But then your responsiveness, you and your team’s responsiveness, and the help that you provide goes above and beyond. I want to thank you for coming on and just sharing your story here, because like I said, or like I always say, success leaves clues. And your experience can help other people determine whether or not this is right for them.

(5:37 – 5:42)
Yeah. Well, thank you so much for inviting me to speak with you. I’ve enjoyed it.

(5:42 – 5:43)
Thank you.
